Our approach & methodology

We build the infrastructure. You own the change.

VNC's approach to systemic organisational change is methodologically rigorous and strategically sequenced. Our engagements follow a signature Exploratory Sequential Mixed Methods design, a research methodology that ensures our quantitative tools emerge from qualitative evidence specific to your organisation, not from generic assumptions about what inclusion looks like.

A woman stands in front of a large digital screen and a banner at a conference or event. She is wearing glasses, a colorful patterned dress, a red cardigan, and white sneakers. The woman holds a tablet or notebook and appears to be speaking or preparing to speak. The banner reads "RISE" with a logo and mentions partners, including DCC, SSI, and CEW. There is a potted plant and a chair next to her.

How we work: the VNC model

Structural inequities in organisations are rarely generic. They are specific, shaped by sector, history, workforce, and the particular ways power moves through an organisation’s systems. VNC is built to respond to that specificity.

We operate on a simple but uncommon principle: the expertise your engagement requires should be determined by your organisation’s structural reality, not by the composition of a fixed consulting team. What you need from equity engagement is not a framework designed for someone else. It is evidence infrastructure built for you: from your data, your workforce, your context. That is what VNC is designed to deliver.

We assemble bespoke, expert-led project teams for every engagement, curated specifically around the complexity of your organisation, your sector, and the structural questions your context demands. No two engagements look the same, because no two organisations are the same. For example the racial inequities operating in a large public hospital looks different from those operating in a financial services firm or a government department. The intersections that matter in your workforce are specific to your workforce. The evidence infrastructure you need to demonstrate change to your board is not the evidence infrastructure another organisation needs.

VNC’s model means you get exactly the expertise your engagement requires, assembled by people who know what that expertise looks like when it is genuinely world-class.

The architecture of every VNC project team is built on four pillars

Scholar-practitioner leadership

Every VNC engagement is led by a scholar-practitioner who does not merely apply existing frameworks to your organisation, but has spent decades building, testing, and refining the very theoretical infrastructure the field draws on. This is not consulting informed by research. This is research informing consulting, in real time, by the people who produce it.

Statistical and measurement infrastructure

VNC brings validated quantitative expertise to every engagement that requires it, i.e. the capacity to design and build bespoke composite indices, validated measurement instruments, and longitudinal tracking tools that transform qualitative insight into irrefutable, benchmarkable evidence. This means that when VNC tells you what is happening in your organisation, we can also tell you how to measure whether it changes. That capacity is rare. In the racial equity consulting space in Australia, it is close to unique.

First nations voice, embedded from the start

Through our foundational partnership with the Centre for Indigenous People and Work (CIPW) at the University of Technology Sydney, every VNC engagement is grounded in First Nations expertise and governance from the outset. Not as an add-on. Not as a consultation. As architecture. Race cannot be addressed in Australian organisations without centring the specific, compounded experience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and VNC’s model ensures that expertise is in the room from day one.

Intersectional practice expertise

VNC draws on a growing network of associate consultants, researchers, and sector specialists whose expertise spans health, government, financial services, education, community services, and more. Every VNC engagement applies an intersectionality lens, and every project team is assembled to bring the specific practice expertise that lens requires in your context.

What this means for you as a client

You are not engaging a team that will run the same workshop they ran for the last three organisations. You are engaging a practice that will look carefully at your specific structural reality, assemble the expertise that reality demands, and build you something that has never existed before, because your organisation has never existed before, and the evidence infrastructure you need is yours to own, not ours to take to the next client.

The lineage is the proof of concept

The VNC model did not emerge from a business plan. It emerged from over four decades (collectively) of leading exactly this kind of work at national scale; building the measurement tools that made large workforce studies such as the RISE project possible, forging the Page 9 of 10 institutional partnerships that gave it reach, and producing the evidence that shifted how Australian organisations understand and respond to structural inequities.
